Wymondham Abbey - 900 years of history . . .
Wymondham’s famous Abbey was founded in 1107 by William D'Albini, Chief Butler to King Henry I. Originally it was a priory of the great Benedictine Monastery of St. Albans, but became an Abbey in its own right in 1448. It has served as the Parish Church of Wymondham since 1538.
Wymondham Abbey is one of the finest of the historic churches of East Anglia. Many of the events in our musical calendar are staged in its magnificent interior.
2007 saw the 900th anniversary of the foundation of the Abbey. To mark this special year, there was a series of events running from April to October, many of which involve music. Wymondham Music Festival was proud to be involved in such an historic occasion.
